Car trip data was a poor guide for bus routes
A ride-hailing platform that also ran buses first tried using its own car-trip data to predict where bus riders would be. It didn’t work, because people who take cars and people who take buses are different groups.

Car trip data was a poor guide for bus routes
Instead, the company used a model that guessed each user’s home and workplace from anonymized trip times (morning trips start at home, evening trips at work) and checked the guesses against addresses some users had saved. It was good enough, though not perfect. Frequent car users were left out, since they would not switch. Local teams screened the suggested routes by hand, and stop locations always needed manual judgment.
